Ever since I was a preteen, when I couldn’t sleep I would imagine myself in the most serene place possible, and take slow, deep breaths in and out while counting backward from one hundred.

The serene setting of my imagination was always one of two places – a deep-green meadow with trees surrounding a crisp, clear, babbling brook where I would relax in a soft pile of deep, plush grass or a big, white, puffy cloud into which I would, in my mind, sink down while its soft luxury contoured to my body. Never, in my wildest dreams, did I ever imagine I could actually sleep on a soft, puffy cloud.

Then, my new Sleep Number M9 bed was delivered.

It may not look much like a white, puffy cloud, but it sure does feel like one. I may or may not have used the words “slightly padded piece of plywood” to describe our 13+ year old mattress after coming back home from the Sleep Number store where we were treated like royalty by Caleb as he helped us find our sleep number.

Find your Sleep Number

Caleb walked us through the process of finding our personal sleep numbers – Brian is a 35 and I am a 40. The point of finding your sleep number isn’t just getting a comfortable bed; it’s finding the level of support needed to eliminate the pressure points that cause an uncomfortable night’s sleep, resulting in poor sleep and a sore body.

Caleb also explained the features of the various beds and showed us the available accessories, such as bedding (with In-Balance technology that helps to keep you cool at night) and pillows built specifically for your needs to keep your head and neck in line with your spine as you sleep.

He also let us try out the FlexFit+ adjustable bed, which adjusts for each sleep partner (it inclines so you can watch TV or read) and has a massage feature. Yeah, I kind of wish we hadn’t done that part. Guess what we want now? {sigh}

I bet most of you would agree that homeschool moms have to be among the most sleep-deprived people on the planet. (And, by “homeschool moms” I totally mean “homeschool moms and dads, in general” because I’m fully aware that I get more sleep than the average person.)

First of all, if we don’t get up before the kids we’re met with chaos from our first waking breath. If we don’t stay up later than the kids, we never get to catch up on Facebook, play Words with Friends, or read blogs. Then, there are lesson plans to write, schoolwork to check, laundry and dishes to wash, and bathrooms to clean.

There is so much to be done and so little time to do it that sleep sometimes becomes an expendable commodity.

Health Benefits of Sleep

As I’ve improved my health over the last three years, I’ve become increasingly aware of the health benefits associated with sleep. Numerous studies have shown a correlation between sleep and weight loss.

Getting less than 7 hours of sleep per night has been shown to increase the risk for weight gain and obesity. Just a couple of weeks ago, I heard a statistic on the radio indicating that the less sleep a person gets each night (below the recommended 7-8 hours) the more calories she consumes during the day.

The old, 13+ year old mattress – can you see the lumps?

Consistently getting a good night’s sleep has also been shown to:

  • Improve memory
  • Increase longevity
  • Improve attention span
  • Lower stress

And, don’t even get me started on the benefits of napping, my favorite Sunday afternoon activity.

When you consider the fact that most people spend nearly a third of their lives sleeping, you begin to realize the importance of getting quality, adequate sleep.

Features of Sleep Number Bed

We’ve found that our Sleep Number bed goes a long way toward that whole quality, adequate sleep thing. It is so comfortable!

The new M9 features 5 inches of insanely comfortable memory foam covering dual air chambers that allow each person to adjust their side of the bed to their own comfort level.

Each air chamber can be filled individually with a wireless remote control. I was surprised at how quickly the chambers fill…and how quietly. One night, I woke up and felt like I wanted the mattress a bit more firm. I was a little worried that I would wake Brian by filling it, but it didn’t disturb him at all.

I’ve heard that the memory foam sleeps hot, but that hasn’t been our experience. All I’ve experienced is something like sleeping on a cloud. The foam just molds to my body, offering unbelievable cushioning and support. I love rolling over during the night and feeling my body just sink into the bed as the foam reshapes itself to new position.

Sleep Number Bed Set Up

The delivery and set-up process was easy and painless. It took less than an hour from the time the delivery truck arrived in our driveway until we were ready to sleep in our new bed – except, you know, it was noon on a Saturday. We seriously considered a nap.

The delivery guys set the mattresses to inflating in the living room while they installed the base on our existing bed frame.

It was fascinating watching them put the bed together. I was expecting them to bring it all in in one piece, but they assembled the bed right in our bedroom. The kids called it a “puzzle bed” and that’s exactly what it looked like.

The sleep number bed (the one we got, anyway) consists of two air chambers, memory foam edges and the memory foam top, all zipped up inside a comfy cover.

Complaints About Sleep Number Bed

We’ve found one really big problem with the Sleep Number bed – we don’t want to get out of it! It’s so hard to roll out of bed in the mornings when I know I’m not going to be able to get back in it until bedtime that night.

Another problem we’ve had is that we keep finding kids in it. My youngest comes and gets in the bed with me every morning when Brian leaves for work. She’s done that for years, but ever since we got the Sleep Number bed, I keep discovering my oldest in my bed napping after lunch.  She said it’s too comfortable.

The only other problem we’ve had is that it’s hard to sleep elsewhere. When I went away on my retreat this past weekend, I was vividly aware that I was not at home in my comfy new bed. I slept okay, but it was so very nice to get back home to my own bed.

I had some people {*cough* my mother *cough*} say that they’d heard that certain {ahem} marital activities were more difficult if the air chambers are not filled to capacity. Just for the record, we have not found that to be an issue. It works just fine filled or adjusted to your sleep number. You know, just in case you wondered.

After coming back from the Savvy Blogging Summit in Atlanta, I just had to purchase a sound spa for our room like the hotel rooms there had. Now, we can sleep to the sound of crashing ocean waves or a gentle rain shower.

My new Sleep Number bed has encouraged me to create the perfect sleep setting in our bedroom, so that a quality, restful night’s sleep can become a part of my new, healthy lifestyle – better eating habits, a healthy level of activity, and a deep, restorative sleep each night. They’re changes I wish I’d made years ago.

What changes can you make to ensure that you’re adding a good night’s sleep to your personal health maintenance? (Pssst…a new Sleep Number bed might make a nice Christmas gift from you and your spouse to each other.)

  1. Well color me jealous! That looks like a fabulous bed. I might have to upgrade someday from our bed, which is soft, but has terrible body impressions. 😛

  2. So I have to ask, I have heard that the sleep number bed is not conducive to cuddling (yeah, we’ll just go with cuddling) because of the separation between the two “zones.” Do you find you notice where the middle is?

    1. I don’t cuddle. 😉 When I’m ready for sleep, I’m ready for sleep. We established that early in our marriage. As far as other {ahem} marital activities, we haven’t had any issues. Of course, Brian is a 35 and I’m a 40, so there isn’t a whole lot of difference in our two sides. And, it only takes a few second to fill the air chambers if there is a noticeable difference. 😉

  3. I’m so happy to see this review! I have been trying to convince my husband that is is what we need!! I suffer from migraines and lack of sleep is a big trigger! Gonna share this with him so maybe we can do this for Christmas.

  4. Great review. I too have a sleep number bed. It is not the same model as yours, but I agree that it is an extremely comfortable bed and I have woke up to my daughter’s hair tangled around my feet more than a few times (she sneaks in the bottom of the bed so as not to get caught).

Our only problem with the bed is that my hubby and i needed to agree on a very similar number; otherwise.. because we sleep close together (yep, we spoon!)… one side is noticebly higher than the other… Luckily for us, Hubby conceded to my number and we sleep happily each night with my hair suffocating his face and my daughter’s tangled on my feet.

    🙂

  5. Matresses are fine, Kingside adjustable a joke. Two seperate frames, unattached, HUGE gap between each half. Forget about intimacy. Each half simply scoots away when you attempt to join with your partener. Worst $5000 I ever spent although comfortable if you stay on your half. We go to the guestroom when feeling amouress.

    1. I’m sorry that you’ve been unhappy with your bed. Ours is a king-size and we haven’t had any trouble at all. The way everything is packed in the zip-up cover once the bed is assembled, ours doesn’t look like it would have room to move. We’re still loving it. It was great this week when my back was bothering me and I could fill up the mattress to get firm support. It helped so much.

  6. SLEEP NUMBER SERVICE SUCKS…
I bought the King, dual controls and paid in full. Now for the second time the air pump or something doesn’t keep the air in the mattress. It deflates as I sleep in it–I’m 119 lbs. Duh? Sleep Number wants to pre-charge me $200 just for a tech to check it out. IF A TECH SHOWS UP, THIS IS NEW MEXICO. Then if there’s parts, and again for the tech to come out and fix it. What kinda a stupidity is this. II would never recommend Sleep Number to anyone. $500 just to get your bed fixed…Think again folks..Its a scam on repairs.
